You can enhance the click through to your website in 5 ways

  1. Use language that is in keeping with the people you are writing to.  If you are writing to professionals then don't tell them ALL YOUR PROBLEMS ARE SOLVED! or MAKE A FORTUNE IN TWO WEEKS! because they simply won't believe you.  You have to show you are at one with them - you and your reader think alike.  This has to be put across in the first few lines - otherwise they will quickly give up and go somewhere else.  In short just as with direct mail you have about five second to grab the reader by the throat and hold on - but you have to use the right language.

  2. Having made the reader interested you need to offer a place to click through to your web site both near the start and at the end of the letter, so the person who always needs to "see what it's all about" can jump straight in, while the reader who likes your style and is willing to go on your journey can read your text and then follow your lead to the web site.

  3. Make sure that your email makes sense on machines that have blocking devises on the emails.  About half the emails I get arrive with little x marks in the corner rather than illustrations because of the standard setting of my outlook express.   I didn't set this up - this is how it came.   So these emails are meaningless - just blocks where pictures should be, and i delete them.   Don't go to graphics unless you know for sure that you are going to be received by everyone who gets the email.

  4. Make sure that the click through is fast - on all machines.  Broadband is wonderful but we don't all have it.  You might have super megafast reception, but what about your reader who has ordinary dial up.   They will give you five seconds then cancel.   Test the page you are sending people to on the slowest dial up machines you can find.

  5. Make sure you are sending the reader to a relevant page.  Clicking through to your home page is no good if they then have to search out the link you have been telling them about.
